Response to Intervention

This talk will provide an overview of Response to Intervention (RTI) approaches as alternatives to IQ-Achievement discrepancy approaches to identifying children as learning disabled. The talk will focus on studies conducted by Scanlon and her colleagues that have demonstrated that the vast majority of early reading difficulties can be prevented through interventions that are initiated early and are responsive to the needs of the learner. Evidence for the role of classroom, small group, and one-to-one interventions will be provided. Dr. Scanlon has done extensive research focused on approaches to preventing reading difficulties and on the relationship between instruction and success in learning to read. Aspects of her research have evaluated the utility of the IQ-Achievement discrepancy approach to diagnosing reading disabilities and the currently recommended Response to Intervention approach. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the United States Department of Education.

Come early at 3:45 to network with other area educators.
